About

Ryan Curtin is a Pilates teacher in San Francisco offering private and small group sessions that blend classical Pilates with a thoughtful, responsive approach to movement. This work has grown through years of training, curiosity, and exploration of what mean to inhabit and understand the body more fully.

Early Years Ryan came to Pilates through dance and gymnastics, disciplines that shaped his sense of precision, rhythm, and responsiveness to breath and intentions. After time away, from formal training, he returned with a deeper curiosity about movement as a way of reconnecting with the body. Training & Education He completed over 1000 hours of training in the Advanced Teacher Training Program through The Pilates Center in Boulder (2020), and later studied through The Kathy Grant Heritage Training with Cara Reeser (2023). Approach Ryan works with clients across all levels—those recovering from injury, managing tension, returning to movement, or seeking a more grounded practice. Sessions may be structured and precise, or more exploratory and responsive, depending on what supports the individual best. Teaching Philosophy This work is not about perfection. It’s about developing trust in your body, your instincts, and what becomes possible when you listen more closely. Over time, this practice supports strength, confidence, and ease.

  • Ryan is THE BEST. I was so nervous to try Pilates, but he made me feel totally comfortable from day one through his deep knowledge and kindness. Now I actually look forward to my sessions every week (who even am I?!). I feel stronger, more confident, and honestly just happier thanks to Ryan!

  • We started Pilates on the advice of a physiotherapist after my husband developed neck pain in his C4, and it’s been a revelation. Even simple things—like tying our shoes while balancing on one leg or climbing a steep incline—now feel stable and effortless, with muscles we never knew existed suddenly coming alive. Ryan guided us to results we never thought possible: greater flexibility, stronger back muscles, and a deeper awareness of how our bodies move. It turns out that truly knowing how to engage all your muscles transforms the way you walk and carry yourself, creating a sense of connection to your own body we hadn’t experienced before.

  • I have been working with Ryan for about two years. I started with Pilates for strengthening and flexibility due to severe weakness secondary to a bad right hip.  I ultimately underwent a hip replacement about a year ago.  I’m so grateful that I found Ryan, he has helped me tremendously prepare to breeze through surgery and rehabilitation.  Pilates has helped me in a non-threatening way to give me increased muscle strength and flexibility. Ryan understands my anatomy and knows just how far to push me.  Pilates changed my world and I highly recommend it for everyone. Ryan is the best.

  • Although I have always been connected to my body, what I can do for it and what it  in turn can do for me, I had never tried Pilates until about a year ago when I started working with Ryan. I began to suffer from scoliosis quite a few years ago. My balance was so thrown off by the curves in my spine that there were times that I couldn’t walk. It was clearly evident, even visually, that there was a big problem with my skeletal system and all that it affects. Within a few weeks of Pilates with Ryan people were commenting on my posture, my straight back, the confidence with which I was moving through the world. Although not as quickly as others, I began to notice it too.Ryan wants to heal and to help and I don't think he would accept any less for his clients. He is responsible for a major shift in my outlook and my physicality. Well…I’ve been asked to keep this short (a bit late for that now I know), so I will close with this. I would recommend Ryan without hesitation to anyone wanting to improve the way they feel, increase their strength, hold their head up high, and have a good time doing it.

  • My wife and I have been doing pilates with Ryan for several years now. Ryan is extremely knowledgeable regarding body mechanics and is a stickler for detail-he makes sure that each movement is done purposefully and correctly. Since starting with Ryan, my flexibility, mobility, stability, and posture have all greatly improved. My overall health and wellness is visibly better because of my work with Ryan and I am wayyyy less stiff and creaky! A wonderful and unexpected side effect from my pilates work with Ryan is a much improved and powerful golf swing that has helped to lower my handicap and increase my enjoyment of the game. Who knew???

  • I wish I could fully enumerate all the wonderful aspects of working with Ryan, but that would take up his whole website! Simply put: Ryan is the best pilates instructor I've worked with in my 10+ years (on and off) of practicing Pilates. He has an uncanny ability to set anyone at ease, even those of us who warm up to new people slowly or may have fallen out of trust with our own bodies. When I first started working with Ryan, it was during a period of my life when I didn't feel connected to my body; more specifically, I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin or that I trusted that my body could feel healthy or be strong again. Ryan helped me, week after week, to feel more embodied and believe I could not just feel physically strong and healthy once more but also really become and be it. Pilates is hard work but with his mixture of calm confidence and enthusiasm for the practice, Ryan makes the hard work of Pilates a little easier and certainly inspires his clients to rise to the challenge. Ryan really is the best. Whether you're new to Pilates, a seasoned practitioner, or returning to the reformer after a break -- I can't recommend working with him highly enough.

  • Working with Ryan has been amazing! I love his  intentional style and words. His cuing is the best and his imagery helps me connect better. Our work together has definitely made me feel stronger, more in control of my body, and oddly taller. Maybe that is just better posture! I think I can listen better too. I’ve also noticed how it helps me prevent injuries or work through minor injuries before they become big ones. When my body hurts instead of wanting to stay away from physical activity I KNOW Pilates will help me get on the road to recovery. Even if you’re not feeling the connection at first you will eventually fall in love with Pilates. It is something that will help you feel good through all stages of life.

  • I was starting to experience some neck and shoulder pain from my work as a tattoo artist, which made me think about the longevity of my career and to seriously take control of my body’s health and flexibility. I no longer wake up sore even after long and challenging weeks at the tattoo studio. My posture has completely changed and I literally feel taller and more lean. Working with Ryan every week has made me more aware of my body, so I’m able to subconsciously adjust my position while working. If I do strain my neck or shoulders, it’s much easier now for me to bounce back to normal. I’m much more confident about my physical appearance as well. I also really just enjoy working with Ryan! He’s passionate and serious about Pilates but is also warm, friendly and relaxed. I have so much fun at my sessions and look forward to them every week. I would recommend investing time in Pilates. It’s an incredible practice to integrate into your weekly routine. It does take time to see changes, but those changes feel much more lasting and permanent. Pilates is a gift not only to your present self but also to your future self.

  • When I first came to Pilates, I dreamed of returning to the strong, mobile body I once knew.  Pilates and Ryan have been my companion on a journey that has taken me through injuries and weight gain, and ultimately, weight loss and empowerment. I feel stronger, leaner, and more conscious of my body and how to effectively integrate my movements and self-correct my own bad habits.  To anyone considering Pilates, I would simply ask - why are you still reading this?  Do it!
